Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl welcomes withdrawal of Liberals’ gun bill
OTTAWA — Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl is welcoming Friday’s announcement that the federal Liberals have withdrawn an amendment to their gun bill designed to codify a definition of banned assault-style firearms, citing “legitimate concerns” about the need for additional consultation on the measure.
Opposition MPs like Strahl, who was first elected in 2011, embraced the move, saying the proposed gun bill constituted an enormous affront to hunters, farmers, and sport shooters.
“After launching the largest attack on hunters, farmers, and sport shooters in Canadian history, Trudeau’s Liberals backed down,” Strahl said in a statement Friday (Feb. 3). “The grassroots firearms community spoke up, Conservatives fought back, and after months of advocacy, the Liberals were forced to withdraw their hunting rifle ban.”
According to the Canadian Press, Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed, on behalf of the government, asked for and received unanimous consent to withdraw the amendment to Bill C-21 at the House of Commons public safety committee Friday (Feb. 3).
