YOUR PERSPECTIVE: B.C.’s housing crisis worse than ever under NDP

Feb 1, 2023 | 1:04 PM

The current NDP government spends a considerable amount of time talking about the housing crisis. They make announcements, mention how difficult it is for the average person to afford a home or rent, and stress that everyone has the right to a good home. And yet, nothing seems to change.

For the everyday people finding it harder than ever to make rent at the end of the month, or who see their dream of owning a home slipping away, it’s obvious that all the empty words from government have done absolutely nothing to improve affordability. In fact, by every metric, housing has only become less affordable under the leadership of this NDP government.

For example, a recent report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) shows that three out of the four least affordable rental markets in the entire country are right here in B.C. Vancouver tops the list, followed by Victoria and Kelowna in the third and fourth spots. Vacancy rates remain at record lows and the average rent for purpose-built rentals has risen an incredible $361 per month since the NDP took office in 2017.

Here in the Fraser Valley, we’ve seen even higher rent increases than the rest of B.C. This is likely due to increased demand, as more people move away from Vancouver in search of affordability. In just six years, the average rent in Abbotsford-Mission increased by a whopping $407 a month. That means renters in our community are paying almost $5,000 more in rent every year than they were before this government came to power.

But it’s not just renters who are feeling the strain of the housing crisis. Homeowners and aspiring homeowners are feeling increasingly hopeless as home prices skyrocket to record heights. Vancouver recently set a new national record, with a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) report saying that “owning a home has never been so unaffordable anywhere in Canada ever.” According to RBC, a family income of $286,000 a year is now needed to afford an average home in Vancouver. This is an astronomically high bar to reach for the vast majority of British Columbians.

It is unacceptable that we’ve reached a point where even a family with two people working full time, making six-figure salaries, could still struggle to find a home they can afford. What does that say to the millions of British Columbians who also deserve to own a home, but don’t make anywhere near that kind of money? It increasingly feels like this NDP government has killed the dream of homeownership for a whole generation of young people.

It is going to take more than words to solve the housing crisis and deliver the results that people desperately need. It is not good enough for government to acknowledge the problem and then continually fail to address it. What we desperately need is an increase in housing supply, and for government to get serious about cutting the red tape and other costs that have become significant barriers to building housing in our province.

British Columbians deserve better, and we are tired of waiting for relief that this government seems incapable of delivering.
