Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre working to triple the number of Aqua Fit classes

CHILLIWACK — The municipal operator of the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre says it continues to work to bring back Aqua Fit classes that were once a staple of the recreation centre.

But it all depends on the ability to procure qualified staff.

In an email to Fraser Valley Today on Friday (Jan. 13), Landing Leisure Centre manager Lauren Janzen indicated the recreation centre has been working to expand group fitness so long as they have instructors.

“We are expanding group fitness, including Aqua Fit, and programming as instructors are sourced,” said Janzen, who also manages the Cheam Leisure Centre and seasonal Rotary Outdoor Pool. “Days and times we can provide programming are impacted by instructor availability.”

As a matter of fact, the facility would like to triple the amount of Aqua Fit programming during 2023.

“We would like to expand to multiple days and times of the day and as availability allows, tripling our Aqua Fit programing over the course of this year,” Janzen said. “We are actively hiring, and encourage all those interested to view our open positions.”

In late November 2022, Aqua Fit returned to the Cheam Leisure Centre for the first time since the YMCA of Greater Vancouver took over as the municipal operator back on September 12.

The long-term goal has been to bring Aqua Fit sessions back to weekday mornings at the Cheam Centre.

According to the Cheam Leisure Centre Facebook page back in November 2022, the current capacity for evening Aqua Fit was 40 swimmers maximum. A note on the Cheam Leisure Centre Facebook page stated, “Thank you for your patience while we recruit and train more lifeguards.”
