Chilliwack man arrested for second-degree murder in fatal stabbing in Mission in mid-December

MISSION — The Lower Mainland Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced in a news release Saturday (Jan. 7) that 27-year-old Matthew Bauer of Chilliwack has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder  stemming from a fatal stabbing in the 33800 block of 4th Avenue in Mission in mid-December.

According to IHIT, Bauer was arrested Friday by Mission and Upper Fraser Valley Mounties for his role in the murder of 64-year-old Holbert Tew. IHIT advised that the B.C. Prosecution Service approved the second-degree murder charge against Bauer on Saturday.

Tew was stabbed to death on Wednesday, Dec. 14, just one night after IHIT was called to the scene of a homicide on Windsor Street in Chilliwack.

On December 14, 2022 at around 7 a.m., the Mission RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in the 33800-block of 4th Avenue in Mission, BC, near Mary Street. Upon arrival, Mission RCMP located a man suffering from stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of first responders, the victim, sadly died on scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and continued to work closely in partnership with the Mission RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and the RCMP Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS).
