CHILLIWACK — Conservation officers in the Fraser Valley have been alerted after a cougar snatched a cat at a residence near the intersection of Vedder Mountain Road and Cultus Lake Road, just west of the Vedder Bridge, in Chilliwack.

Murray Jones posted on social media Thursday (Jan. 5) that a cougar grabbed his cat near his front door and made off with it.

“[The cougar] grabbed my cat near my front door,” Jones wrote on Facebook. “I heard a commotion and opened the door to look. The cougar was 3 feet away with my cat in its mouth. It turned to look at me and then ran.”

Jones advised that a conservation officer told him that they have had approximately 15 calls about a cougar.

“Be wary on the trails or in your yard,” Jones advised.

The cougar sighting occurred less than a week after a cougar mauled a cat in Eastern Hillsides off Nixon Road just before the New Year, according to footage posted online by Chilliwack resident Erik Devisser. Days prior to that, a Chilliwack woman, Ashley Lee, encountered a cougar at the Island 22 dog park on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
