CHILLIWACK — Less than a week after a Chilliwack resident encountered a cougar at the Island 22 dog park near Fairfield Island, there’s been another cougar spotted in Chilliwack, this time in a residential neighbourhood in Eastern Hillsides off Nixon Road.

Chilliwack resident Erik Devisser posted on social media Saturday morning (Dec. 31) that a cougar was spotted in the Eastern Hillsides neighbourhood.

“We’ve seen bears, deer, skunks, bobcats, and even an otter in our neighbourhood but have never caught a cougar on camera before. Careful with your outdoor pets!” Devisser wrote Saturday morning.

Shortly after Devisser posted the security camera footage on Twitter, he later indicated it wasn’t the cougar’s shadow that appears just beneath the giant cat, but rather someone’s cat that succumbed to injuries. Out of respect for the cat’s owner, Devisser said he did not post extended footage of the mauling.

Earlier this week, Ashley Lee posted on Facebook about her encounter with a cougar in the Island 22 dog park Wednesday (Dec. 28) at around 10 a.m.

“Just a heads up if you go to Island 22 park,” Lee wrote on social media. “My husband and our dog just had a run in with a cougar in the dog park area this morning. No surprise due to the setting but just wanted to give a warning to others who frequent the park. The cougar was approaching my husband who was yelling to scare it off and our brave dog came flying out of nowhere full speed and bashed into the side of the cougar scaring it off into the bush.”

Park workers have since added extra signage alerting people to a cougar in the area at Island 22, a regional park managed by the Fraser Valley Regional District.
