Fraser Health to budget $6.6 million for land acquisition to possibly expand Chilliwack General Hospital

CHILLIWACK — Fraser Health Authority says it will budget up to $6.6 million to acquire up to five land lots on Mary Street and School Street on the north side of town as it seeks to possibly expand the aging Chilliwack General Hospital.

In a letter dated December 5 from Dr. Victoria Lee, CEO of Fraser Health, the health authority notified the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District that it has approved $21 million in capital investments for what it calls Fraser East.

Of those $21 million in capital outlays planned for Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission and Hope, Dr. Lee wrote that $6.6 million has been set aside for the purchase of land assembly of five lots on Mary Street and School Street for health care development adjacent to Chilliwack General Hospital.

“This land is required to accommodate potential expansion of CGH and/or related health care facilities and services in the future,” Dr. Lee wrote to the FVRD.

Fraser Health will fund the land acquisition entirely itself, as it is not asking for any contribution from the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District nor the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.

As for other capital projects it approved, Fraser Health intends to purchase a multi-purpose fluoroscopy unit replacement as the current apparatus was purchased in 2004 and is experiencing frequent down time, Dr. Lee wrote. She estimates a replacement will cost $3 million.

“The new [fluoroscopy] unit will introduce the latest technology, ensure image quality and support a fully functioning fluoroscopy service,” Dr. Lee wrote. “Associated renovations will include power supply and HVAC upgrades as well as a general upgrade to the floor, ceiling and walls.”

Fraser Health is asking for the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District to contribute $900,000 of the $3 million replacement cost.

As one of the two remaining major capital projects Dr. Lee alluded to, Fraser Health plans to seek a long-term, more permanent venue for the Integrated Homeless Action Response Team (IHART) that supports and services the Chilliwack area. The team is temporarily housed in the former Travelodge hotel at the corner of Yale Road and Vedder Road. Finding a long-term space will cost an estimated $1.7 million, of which Fraser Health will fund it exclusively.

Lastly, Fraser Health is intent on replacing the main, northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast sections of the CGH Parkholm Place roof, which the health authority says was installed over 22 years ago.

Referring to the roof, Dr. Lee wrote, “There is extreme blistering. This is a modified bitumen roof and is operating past its useful life. These sections of the roof are rated Risk Rating 1 with a high risk of failure.”
