CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack wrote in its monthly transportation newsletter Friday (Dec. 2) that it is progressing on improvements to the heavily traveled intersection of Vedder Road and South Sumas Road in Sardis.

“Crews finished taking out trees so we can widen the intersection,” the city wrote. “The next step is for B.C. Hydro, Telus, and Shaw to move their utility poles.”

According to a project timeline on the city’s website, pole relocations will occur between November and February 2023, with drainage and roadwork to begin in early spring 2023. It is anticipated that construction will wrap up in April.

So far the project calls for a traffic signal expansion and approximately 260 meters of road widening along with paving, drainage, streetlights, curb and sidewalk.

Dedicated left-turn lanes on Vedder Road for traffic heading eastbound and westbound on South Sumas Road will be provided.

Back in September, the City of Chilliwack announced that property acquisitions at the intersection of Vedder Road and South Sumas Road were nearing completion. The project had been awarded to a design build contractor, and coordination with B.C. Hydro and Telus was underway, with utility pole relocations awaiting schedule confirmation.

While the design was set to be completed in July, delays have occurred. The city had previously projected a construction timeline of September through November 2022.

Traffic volume turning left onto South Sumas Road from southbound Vedder Road has increased in recent years due to significant residential construction east of Vedder Road in that vicinity of Sardis. This can be attributed to a multi-phase, newer subdivision at 45900 South Sumas Road.

Motorists heading northbound on Vedder Road already have the benefit of a dedicated left-turn traffic light that feeds onto westbound South Sumas Road.
