CHILLIWACK — Weather forecasters get blamed for when their predictions often go awry, but for the most part Tuesday night, their snowfall predictions hit the bullseye.

A winter storm arrived Tuesday night (Nov. 29) and brought upwards of 25 centimeters of snow across Chilliwack and Sardis, prompting SD33 to cancel all its classes today.

“Student and staff safety is paramount,” SD33 Superintendent Rohan Arul-pragasam wrote on Twitter at around 6 a.m. this morning. “Due to very icy road conditions, we have determined that schools will be closed for students and staff today, Wednesday, November 30, 2022. All rentals, community schools and daycares are also closed. Stay safe.”

Schools outside of Chilliwack were also closed, including Seabird Island Band Community School east of Chilliwack as well as the Abbotsford School District.

The Abbotsford School District wasn’t entirely closed. It wrote on Twitter that it still expected certain employees to report to work.

“Employees designated as winter services personnel are expected to report to work. Winter services personnel include Principals/Vice-Principals, Operations Management, and all Facilities & Maintenance team members. Winter services personnel who cannot attend their regular place of work are to contact their immediate supervisor.

Road conditions on Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Abbotsford didn’t impede commuters and motorists from heading to work, school or other destinations, but at a much slower pace.

Shauna Martens Jimmie wrote on Fraser Valley Road report at 7:30 a.m., “[I] just drove from Lickman in Chilliwack to McCallum in Abbotsford. Took about 25-30 minutes as most of us on the road were driving with patience and doing 50-80km/h.”

Environment Canada is calling for flurries on Friday and more snow Friday evening. Temperatures will linger below zero at night, with wind chills projected to hit -17 Celsius Thursday morning.
