Updated: Chilliwack RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk said at 2:32 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 30) that the investigation has been handed over to the military police there at Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack. A spokesperson for the military base in Chilliwack, Warrant Officer Dory, said he had no comment at this time other than to say it’s a military police investigation being handled jointly with the RCMP.

Original story below:

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP are investigating the theft of a skid steer, or bobcat-type machine, from the Canadian Forces Base in Chilliwack that occurred sometime Saturday night, Nov. 26, or early Sunday morning, Nov. 27.

A resident living just west of the military base reported on Facebook Sunday afternoon that Chilliwack RCMP were investigating the theft after a section of the perimeter fence belonging to the military base was apparently cut, allowing the rogue thieves to make off with the skid steer sometime during the weekend.

After a section of the perimeter fence was cut, the skid steer was driven through the city-owned woodlot at 44875 Anglers Boulevard, onto nearby Anglers Boulevard and into Tyee Lane, a cul de sac, before going down a walking path and onto a nearby path parallel to the Vedder Rotary trail, and eventually beyond Peach Park. A resident in the neighbourhood reported seeing tracks along the trail Sunday morning in Peach Park.

The getaway route for the thieves may have been orchestrated so that any truck picking up the skid steer would be in a park and away from any residential surveillance cameras.

Gusty, blustery winds that night may have played a role in obscuring the theft, as some residents might have normally heard a skid steer being driven through the neighbourhood late at night or overnight.

Constable C. McGregor of the Chilliwack RCMP was the attending constable working on the investigation.
