CHILLIWACK — Get ready for the first blast of winter set to arrive in Chilliwack today.

Environment Canada has revised its original forecast of 10-15 centimeters of snow to fall today, and is instead expecting anywhere from 20-25 centimeters of snow to fall later today in Chilliwack and Hope stretching into Wednesday evening.

According to a special weather statement issued by the national weather forecaster at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 29), outflow conditions accompanied by strong winds and sub-zero temperatures and extremely cold wind chills are forecast for the next 24 hours.

Snowfall accumulations will vary across the Lower Mainland, with Chilliwack and Hope likely to receive the most accumulations.

An hourly forecast from Environment Canada says there’s a higher likelihood of snow that will begin at roughly 5 p.m. today, before transitioning to heavy snow starting close to 7 p.m.

Modified arctic air continues to push its way out over the Lower Mainland and south coast. Strong outflow winds will develop, followed by falling temperatures the next couple of days, Environment Canada says.

Strong southwest winds will mix down with gusts in the 40-70 kilometer an hour range.

The City of Chilliwack posted on Facebook Monday night (Nov. 28) that its public works crews are prepping for the arrival of Old Man Winter.

“Our crews are brining roads, salting bus stops, preparing the fleet, and responding to roads that had snow or slush last night,” the city wrote on social media.
