CHILLIWACK — It’s not everyday that living wage jobs within Chilliwack become available, particularly those involving a public agency that typically pays robust, competitive wages.

But labour shortages have become the norm across Chilliwack, the Lower Mainland, B.C. itself, and Canada, as a low unemployment rate and a tight labour market have invariably impacted both private and public-sector employers.

The Chilliwack School District isn’t immune to these ongoing labour challenges, as it has put out the call in recent weeks and months that it is hiring for uncertified teachers on call, bus drivers, and custodians.

SD33 enrols over 14,000 students in kindergarten to Grade 12 and is one of the biggest employers in Chilliwack, if not the biggest outright, with 1,800 teachers and support staff.

The shortage of teachers and TTOCs, or teachers teaching on call, has been heightened by seasonal illness and sickness, amplifying the need for additional personnel to fill in for certified teachers.

TTOCs can make over $200 a day.

According to a description from Make a Future, a job website utilized by school districts across B.C., “The Chilliwack School District is seeking highly skilled and dynamic individuals to join our list of Casual Uncertified Teachers Teaching on Call. Preference will be given to individuals with a demonstrated work history or volunteer experience working with children and youth.”

Required qualifications and training include:

• Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent academic qualifications
• Recent successful teaching experience and/or training preferred
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated interest in working with children and youth

Applications are accepted through the Make a Future website and must include a cover letter, resume, copies of university transcripts, and names of two supervisor references.

Due to the profound need for TTOCs, SD33 has not set a deadline date since hiring will occur on an ongoing basis.

Make a Future lists 88 current job openings within Chilliwack School District.

More recently, Chilliwack School District has posted to its website an urgent need for bus drivers. On its website, SD33 wrote: “The Chilliwack School District Transportation Department is seeking bus drivers. If you are interested in this exciting, rewarding opportunity, apply in person with a resume, at the Transportation Department, 44877 Yale Road.” Questions about bus driver openings may be answered by calling 604-792-1255.

At the same time, the school district is also hiring custodians. A sign encouraging people to apply for custodial positions was recently attached to the fence of the SD33 maintenance yard on Yale Road, near Murray Honda.
