CHILLIWACK — Outgoing SD33 Secretary-Treasurer Gerry Slykhuis’ post-retirement plans of being a full-time trail runner and doting grandpa may have to wait a few more years.

Slykhuis, who was already slated to leave the Chilliwack School District on December 31 and make room for his successor, Dr. Simone Sangster, has accepted a position as the secretary-treasurer for the Fraser-Cascade School District in Hope.

Slykhuis notified the Chilliwack School District Board of Education Thursday about his plans.

“Although I had planned to start my retirement in January, the opportunity with the Fraser-Cascade School District was too good to pass up,” Slykhuis said in an email to Fraser Valley Today on Saturday (Nov. 19). “The District has a great team and Board, and I look forward to working with them.”

According to his bio on the SD33 website (https://www.sd33.bc.ca/gerry-slykhuis), Slykhuis has been the SD33 secretary-treasurer since September 2013. His current responsibilities have him overseeing finance, maintenance, student transportation, and capital projects. He has over 40 years of financial experience.

“His passion is using his “easy button” to make things run well,” his SD33 bio stated. “When Gerry isn’t working he loves to run trails with his family.”

SD33 announced back on October 21 that Dr. Sangster would replace Slykhuis effective January 1, 2023, and the Chilliwack School District will be in good hands financially based on her resume.

Dr. Sangster is currently the Assistant School Superintendent of Finance for Bellingham Public Schools. She has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales in Australia, a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Harvard University. Dr. Sangster is a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia and has experience working for KPMG both in Vancouver and Sydney.
