Chilliwack Board of Education accommodates Sept 19 holiday for Queen Elizabeth, discusses budget constraints.
CHILLIWACK — The Trustees of the Chilliwack Board of Education met Tuesday (Nov.8) in a short meeting that finished with adjustments made to the school calendar and budget issues being raised.
The Board voted unanimously to decrease the school year by one day to account for the September 19 holiday to recognize the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The five hour decrease in instruction hours was accounted for in SD # 33 curriculum.
Budget issues were discussed for the remainder of the meeting with challenges for the year being highlighted. Chair Willow Richelt explained that “revenue was down as it reflects a decline in enrolment, which is currently not represented in current budgeting.”
While overall enrolment was down, the number of students with special needs increased in the district. In order to match the increase, more funding was added to special needs programs. “There is a need for more EAs and other support staff,” commented District Treasurer Gerry Slykhuis.
