ABBOTSFORD — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is examining a September event in Abbotsford that resulted in serious injuries to one man.

According to information provided by the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner, police were called to an alleged theft and disturbance at a business on George Ferguson Way on September 8. Upon the arrival of the police, there was an altercation before the man was taken into custody. A short time later, the man went into medical distress and was taken to hospital.

Initially, the man’s injuries were not believed to be serious, therefore the IIO was not alerted to the case. But a few weeks later when the full nature of the injuries was understood, the IIO was notified by the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner. Their call to IIO was made when their review found that the man may have suffered serious harm.

The IIO is asking anyone with information, video or dashcam video of the incident, to contact its Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
