Voters opt for change in Vancouver and Surrey

VANCOUVER — Ken Sim’s second time running for mayor of Vancouver has been successful.

The Vancouver businessman defeated Kennedy Stewart last night with an overwhelming majority.

In 2018, Stewart defeated Sim by less than 1,000 votes, but times have changed.

Sim promises to hire 100 new police officers and 100 mental health workers.

Meantime Surrey is getting a new mayor and may be keeping the R-C-M-P.

Brenda Locke defeated Mayor Doug McCallum last night and she says one of her first jobs as mayor will be making sure the city keeps the Mounties as its police force.

One of McCallum’s major initiatives during his term as mayor was to replace Surrey’s R-C-M-P with a city police force.

Locke says she will also work to provide better health care, improve public safety and streamline permitting processes for housing developments. (The Canadian Press)
