Cultus Lake embarks on main beach dock restoration work that will take about 12-15 weeks

CHILLIWACK — Reconstruction of the Cultus Lake docks following last year’s atmospheric river events has begun, but the Cultus Lake Park Board won’t be the recipient of any disaster relief funding from the provincial government.

The Cultus Lake Park Board announced Tuesday (Sept. 20) that restoration work has launched in order to rebuild the main beach docks that were heavily damaged after the unprecedented rain and wind events of November 2021.

“The Main Beach foreshore area will be inaccessible until further notice to accommodate storage of heavy equipment and materials for the dock installation,” the park board said in a news release posted to social media. “For public safety, residents and guests should refrain from accessing the fenced area for duration of the work. The foreshore pathway will remain accessible to enjoy docks that are currently open.”

Twenty-two docks will be repaired or replaced, according to Joe Lamb, chief administrative officer for Cultus Lake Park Board.

The dock repair work is expected to take between 12 and 15 weeks, Lamb noted, and will be completed under the supervision of a qualified environmental professional.

The park board has received no funding for the docks from the Disaster Financial Assistance program, meaning no provincial aid is being provided.

Instead, all repair work is being completed based on an insurance claim. The deductible will be a direct park expense, Lamb said.
