Mission — The 42nd annual Terry Fox Run returned to an in-person event after a two-year pandemic pause in Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park.

Runners hit the pavement Sunday morning, in an effort to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation and to honour the late Canadian hero’s legacy.

Michelle Arlidge, event coordinator for the Terry Fox Run in Mission, said the event saw just over 100 people, with 15 cadets volunteering to ensure runners didn’t get lost along the route.

“Today was a fun run for charity, and we had a 1.2km and a 5km distance,” Arlidge said. “We started today at 9 a.m. with registration, and then the run started at 10 a.m.”

Organizers set a goal of $1,000 to fundraise, and the result exceeded expectations, raising almost $3,000.

“We wanted to keep it low barrier, so it was any amount that could be contributed,” Arlidge remarked. “One of our participants, I think he was nine years old, emptied his piggy bank for $4.60, and we had all the way up to several hundred dollars donated.”

In attendance were Mayor Paul Horn and Coun. Mark Davies—who shared of his own battle with cancer.

Arlidge herself has participated in various Terry Fox Runs for the last 20 years, and said she was moved to take on a more direct role in the event when there was an opening for the coordinator position.

“I think it’s a really great and important community event, and when they were looking for someone to help take it over, I was quick to raise my hand,” she said.

Terry Fox Runs were held throughout Canada on Sunday, 42 years after Fox launched his Marathon of Hope.
