CHILLIWACK — Junk and unsightly debris seem to accumulate in the Chilliwack/Vedder River without fail.

Thanks to the work of dedicated local volunteers, however, over 115 tonnes of taste have been collected since 2002, reflecting ongoing efforts to keep the shoreline environment free and clear of unwanted clutter.

The City of Chilliwack has partnered with the Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society (CVRCS) and the Fraser Valley Regional District for the Adopt a River program, aimed at improving the environment of the Vedder/Chilliwack River through organized, regular cleanup events.

The fall 2022 Adopt a River cleanup is scheduled for this Sunday, Sept. 25. Registration opens at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association, 48685 Chilliwack Lake Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. You can also pre-register by emailing info@cleanrivers.ca and include your full name and the names of the volunteers in your group, phone number and emergency contact.

Every pre-registered volunteer will receive a raffle ticket at check-in (8:30 a.m. at the Chilliwack Fish and Game club) for a special raffle prize. There will also be a separate prize for everyone when they sign a waiver. Cleanup will continue until 1 p.m.

Exhibitors will be welcomed back to help educate everyone about the amazing river valley in which residents play and live. Volunteers will be able to check out these exhibitors after check-in, before or after collecting garbage.

Garbage and recycling bags as well as gloves will be provided and the volunteers will provide the ‘boots on the ground’. The event will happen rain or shine.

Under the City’s Adopt a River program, community groups adopt sections of the Vedder River or Canal and are responsible for providing litter/garbage collection services twice per year.

For each cleanup event, the City of Chilliwack provides garbage/recycling bags, free disposal on site, and collection service for large items which are too bulky or heavy for the volunteer groups. Each participating group will be acknowledged through an Adopt a River sign installed in their adopted section.

The three agencies wish to thank all committed volunteers as they work to help protect the beautiful Chilliwack-Vedder River Valley.

The City would also like to thank the following sponsors for their support of the Adopt a River program, including First Class Waste Services, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, FVRD, Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association, Tim Hortons, Barton Insurance Brokers, Fishing with Rod Productions, and Glad.
