CHILLIWACK — Multiple engines and firefighters from the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a residential fire in a neighbourhood just west of Watson Elementary on Sunday, Aug. 28 just after 2:15 p.m.

At least five fire engines and at least 12 firefighters, as well as B.C. ambulance personnel, were dispatched Sunday to the 45100 block of Oliver Crescent, about 250 metres west of Watson Elementary and close to the Watson and Tyson roundabout.

A fire appears to have started in the garage area of the home. It spread and burned the roof and attic of the single-family home.

According to neighbours standing on Oliver Crescent who witnessed the event, two female occupants were able to escape from the blaze unharmed. The neighbours reported fire crews were quick to arrive within approximately five to seven minutes.

There were two vehicles in the driveway at the home, including a grey Honda CRV that may have sustained smoke or fire damage.

The fire did not spread to properties on either side of it.

It’s been a busy couple days for the Chilliwack Fire Department, which extinguished a residential fire Friday morning (Aug. 26) in Fairfield Island at 2:45 a.m. in the 10600 block of Young Road. That home, carport and a Ford SUV were heavily damaged by fire.

Prior to that, the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched on Thursday night, Aug. 25 to a report of a structure fire in the 45000 block of Westview Avenue, about a kilometre west of Chilliwack General Hospital. Twelve firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the scene and discovered a small fire on the upstairs deck of the home.

According to a statement from the Chilliwack Fire Department, this fire had the potential to cause serious damage to the home, however the tenant acted quickly and began to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before the arrival of fire crews. The tenant’s actions combined with the swift work of fire crews to complete extinguishment and check for fire spread significantly reduced the amount of damage that could have occurred.
