CHILLIWACK — Environment Canada and local medical health officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat following a weather warning from the national weather forecaster.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning Tuesday (Aug. 16) morning for the Fraser Valley encompassing Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Hope, and is urging the public to take precautions.

The national weather agency is warning that daytime temperatures for Chilliwack could approach 35 degrees Wednesday, as a strong ridge of high pressure brings a stretch of hot weather for the next couple days. The humidex could approach 38 degrees Wednesday.

Environment Canada estimates the hottest time of the day will be late afternoon to early evening, and says the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors.
