ABBOTSFORD — Bosley’s on Whatcom Road in Abbotsford had more people walking through their doors this weekend (Aug. 13 and Aug. 14), as they held a cat and kitten adoption event through the Heart and Soul Dog and Cat Rescue Society.

Charmayne Head, who is a pet expert at the store, was very busy as she greeted a lineup of potential adopters.

“So, right now a bunch of cats and kittens that have come in from fosters, who are posted on the Heart and Soul website that are available for adoption,” she explained. “So, if people are interested, they can come into the store here and fill out an application.”

She further explained that once the application has been approved, people are able to hold the furry friend of their choice to see if it’s the right fit for them.

“And then we go ahead with the contract and fill that all out, and go ahead with the adoption procedure,” Head expanded.

According to the pet expert, there were 15 cats and kittens up for adoption at the event, and as of late Saturday afternoon, 5 or 6 had been adopted.

“It’s been a very busy morning,” she said. “So, people come in and we have an application form that just gets a little bit of personal information, like where they live and all of that kind of stuff.”

The application also inquires about previous pet ownership, why they’re looking to adopt, and what they feel is going to make them a good adopter.

“The response is great; they all seem really receptive to the application process,” Head remarked.

Adoption fees range depending on what people are looking for; the fees for kittens are $350, and the fee includes a certificate for the kitten to be spayed or neutered and microchipped at a selected vet.

“Vaccinations will be up to date as of the date of adoption,” the pet expert explained. “They’ve been flea treated and dewormed; their ears are cleaned; their nails are clipped. It also comes with a complimentary, six-week trial period of pet insurance from Pet Plus Us.”

Ashley Jackson, who is the owner of Heart and Soul Dog and Cat Rescue Society, said the support from Bosley’s on Whatcom helps “tremendously”.

“Because there’s a place where we can set up safely and have animals viewed by potential adopters,” Jackson said. “Where they can see and meet and get to know the personalities and just kind of hang out.”

She added that in most cases, people can speak with the fosters of the animals and get more details on them to ensure they’re the right fit for their family.

“We take in lots of applications; it doesn’t mean that all those applications are approved,” Jackson said matter-of-factly. “But we do get quite a few applications for every animal. And a lot of the time, it’s actually people that have already adopted from us, and they’re coming back for their second animal.”
