Nomination packages now available for candidates interested in running for the Chilliwack municipal election this fall

CHILLIWACK — Depending on how you see it, it can be a long, tedious, even thankless journey at times serving the public as an elected official, or a rewarding experience for individuals dedicated to enhancing their community and making decisions that better the lives of residents.

There are regular meetings, committee meetings, countless staff reports to read and digest, and email and telephone correspondence with constituents, and community events to attend when applicable.

For those passionate enough to serve their community over the next four years, nomination packages are now available during normal business hours at Chilliwack City Hall, 8550 Young Road, for those interested in running for Chilliwack City Council or Chilliwack School District Board of Education.

Similar nomination packages are now available at Cultus Lake Park Board, 4169 Columbia Valley Highway, for those interested in seeking a seat on the park board.

Similar paperwork for those interested in a seat in the electoral areas for the Fraser Valley Regional District Board of Directors will be available starting Tuesday, August 9 at FVRD headquarters, 45950 Cheam Avenue.

The qualifications only require that candidates be 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed, and not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia.

The nomination period runs from August 30 through September 9.

Voting day is Saturday, October 15, with advanced voting day on October 5.

Remuneration for Chilliwack elected officials varies across the map. Cultus Lake Park Board commissioners earn $14,919.60 annually. School board trustees earn $21,687 per year as a base figure. The chair and vice-chair of the park board and school board earn more due to additional board responsibilities.

The Chilliwack mayor earns $122,181 per year, while Chilliwack city councillors earn $43,899 annually. Fraser Valley Regional District directors who are not representing a municipality earn approximately $36,000 a year.

All candidates for public office are required to submit their financial disclosure documents to Elections BC for verification and publication, in compliance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act.
