CHILLIWACK — A Rotarian and familiar face from the 2018 municipal election is making another run for Chilliwack City Council.

Debora Soutar, a retired professional forester, will add her name to the list of candidates vying for one of six seats on the Chilliwack City Council in this fall’s municipal election.

According to her campaign press release, Soutar ran for Chilliwack council in 2018 and considered the experience a pleasant one. This time around, she’s still passionate about the same issues she was four years ago.

“I found the process [of running] to be highly rewarding,” said Soutar. “I’m still concerned about many of the same issues such as climate, housing, and agriculture.”

Soutar has an active service portfolio. She serves as a director for the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition, is active with Chilliwack Parks Society, and on the City of Chilliwack Parks and Trails Committee. She is secretary for the Gwynne Vaughan Park Society, a director for the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society and is an active member with both the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society and Rotary Club of Chilliwack. She is a past president of the Rotary Club of Chilliwack.

Debora chairs the Futures Team for Cheam View United Church, which is charged with redeveloping the Spadina site (formerly Chilliwack United Church) for affordable housing in partnership with Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society and B.C. Housing. She is leading the renovation of the Quarry site, formerly Mt. Shannon United Church). She also serves on the Property Team and is a church trustee.

Debora believes strongly in the importance of education and is an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She recently obtained a Bachelor of Integrated Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley with a Wetland Conservation theme.

Debora, with her husband Bill, raised three sons and now enjoys spending time with four grandchildren. She loves hiking, kayaking and gardening. She enjoys sharing nature with her community and can be found leading interpretive walks around Chilliwack. Theatre aficionados might even catch a glimpse of her in the chorus of the upcoming production of Mamma Mia.
