BC Culture Days: A nature walk with a printmaking twist

Jul 26, 2022 | 6:00 AM

MISSION — This week, as part of BC Culture Days, kids took a walk in Centennial Park in Mission to learn more about nature. This year’s theme is “Earth Endeavours.”

Emilie Kvist is one of eight ambassadors for the program and was the tour guide for Monday’s session called “Into Nature.”

“I’m a printmaker by trade, and so I was really interested in the topic of Earth Endeavors for myself,” Kvist said. “Part of that was post-pandemic recovery.”

Kvist explained that during the pandemic, she did not have a lot of studio space to work with.

“Not being able to have access to those spaces meant that I wasn’t able to do as much work, which was sad,” she explained. “And so, to cope with that, I started spending time in nature, and that helped boost my creative efforts.”

Kvist stated that she became fascinated by everything from the smallest mushrooms to the smell of rain, so she began researching plants.

“And it got me thinking about how often we don’t really look at plants when we are walking around,” she remarked.

With “Into Nature”, the printmaker hoped to help individuals—young and old—slow down and take a closer look at their surroundings.

“We did an activity where we stopped, we listened silently for two minutes and shared what we heard,” she said.

During the session, Kvist helped children identify and learn about specific plants found in the park, and they had a scavenger hunt.

“I think the main takeaway is to take time to slow down and look at what’s around us,” she said. “And just giving time—time to be there.”

Culture Days national celebration is set to take place between Sept. 23 and Oct. 16.
