Abbotsford police, fire investigate 2nd arson at apartment building

ABBOTSFORD — On Saturday night (Jul. 23), the Abbotsford Police Department responded to a request for assistance from the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service following a suspicious fire at an apartment building in the 33100 block of George Ferguson Way.

Authorities learned that a small fire had been intentionally started in the second floor landing of a stairwell inside the apartment building, according to a statement from Abbotsford Police Department on Monday (Jul. 25).

Residents inside the apartment building quickly extinguished the fire. No injuries were sustained, and no residents were displaced by the fire.

Abbotsford Fire personnel have been investigating the fire and now believe it was intentionally set. The Abbotsford Police Department will be investigating the incident as arson.

This is the second incident of arson that Abbotsford Police Major Crime are investigating at this apartment building. The previous arson occurred on April 18, at approximately 10:30 p.m., when Abbotsford Police Department and Abbotsford Fire were called to a small fire in the first floor stairwell of the same apartment building. The fire was extinguished by a resident, but minor damage was sustained.

Detectives from the Abbotsford Police Department Major Crime Unit are canvassing for video and additional witnesses and are asking residents to report activities that the public finds suspicious. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Major Crime Unit at 604-859-5225.
