Tydel Foods location to remain open after outpouring of community support

CHILLIWACK — The lights will be staying on at Tydel Foods’ original Patten Avenue location after all, thanks to some big media coverage and an outpouring of generous donations.

Owner Brigida Crosbie shared the news in a social media post on Thursday, April 10.

“This community continues to show me that love shows up when you need it most,” she wrote. “God works in the most incredible ways, and your kindness is a reflection of that.”

In an earlier livestream, Crosbie said Todd Hiebert, the Patten Ave location’s building owner, had offered to cut the lease down to $1,500. The shop then had to cover another $11,200 to buy out the lease for its coolers and freezer.

“I handed a bag of potatoes to a senior and she started to cry and that’s just not normal. That’s when you know you’re in a crisis […] We have parents watering down milk trying to stretch it and get through through the economy whichever way they can, because food prices have increased so significantly.”

“But by the grace of God, if $11,200 comes in on donations, we will be able to remain open.”

Putting people over profits

Less than a day after that call for support, the community answered, and the meat store will now stay open with the same low prices.

“We have not increased our meat prices,” said Crosbie during her stream. “The suppliers have increased on their end, and we have taken that buffer.”

The Community Angels seniors program is also set to keep running, and the shop will be starting a hunger hotline starting May 1 so that “anyone who is hungry and needs a meal will be able to call that number and reach out for real help.”
