CHILLIWACK — A small, passionate set of Chilliwack locals is determined to offer some relief from food insecurity by launching a new free farming event starting next month.

Beginning April 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, Moran family-owned Fantasy Farms is set to host a monthly “Growing Together” event at its greenhouse on 9423 Gibson Road.

The program, which involves sending participants home with a different potted vegetable each month, is tailored for children ages five to 12 and their guardians.

Chilliwack resident and publicist Debbie Walker says the continued interest in farm-growing events among residents is proof that people still have a need to get out of “endless hamper programs”.

“We [also] offer the families ideas to encourage them to include single-use plastics as growing mediums to reduce costs and recycle what otherwise would end up in the bin,” Walker added. “There are many facets to this program, and it instills a sense of pride for all involved.”

Families can also meet the Morans’ goats, chickens and pigs during the program.

Walker and farmer Gary Moran launched two successful events as part of the Oasis Gardening Initiative program last year.

Registration starts on-site at 9:30 a.m. or via email at gardeninginitiative@gmail.com.
