Crews on scene of big rig fire on Coquihalla Highway near Hope

UPDATE 10:35 A.M. AUGUST 30: DriveBC reports that the southbound right lane is now open near Carolin Mine Road after the semi fire.

HOPE — Crews are on scene after a semi truck set ablaze on the Coquihalla Highway just before Friday afternoon (Aug. 29).

Motorists reported a vehicle fire on the highway between Carolin Mine Road and Dewdney Creek at around 11:30 a.m., with DriveBC confirming reports of an incident southbound on Highway 5.

A witness, Paige van Rhyn, said the truck was on the shoulder of the road right after a bend.

At around 1:30 p.m., video from another driver shows helicopter bucketing operations in action to prevent the fire from spreading further into the bushes.

The right lane of the Coquihalla southbound near Carolin Mine Road has been blocked.
