HARRISON HOT SPRINGS — A fire that broke out on a boat moored at the Harrison Hot Springs Marina early Thursday morning (Feb. 6) took nearly three hours for area firefighters to bring under control.

Sqéwqel Development Corporation (SqDC), the economic and business arm of Seabird Island First Nation which recently purchased the Harrison Hot Springs Marina and took over operations earlier this week, says the fire started at approximately 5 a.m., prompting a response from the Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department. SqDC suspects the fire started due to a faulty electrical connection.

Video taken by Dave Beauchamp shows a vessel fully engulfed in flames in the early morning hours.

Additional assistance was requested from the Agassiz Fire Department. Firefighters worked for approximately three hours to bring the fire under control. One boat was lost due to fire damage, while two others sustained minor damage, SqDC says. The dock did not sustain significant structural damage, and marina operations remain open. No injuries were reported.

“While we are still in the early stages of our transition, we are fully committed to ensuring the safety of our marina tenants and the broader community,” said Nigel Selvadurai, CEO at SqDC. “We appreciate the efforts of the emergency response teams and the support of our staff during this incident.”

Efforts are currently underway to safely remove the damaged vessel from the water. The marina remains open, and the corporation appreciates the patience and cooperation of its marina tenants and the broader community as it works to complete the recovery process.
